La bulla es mi luliby!

Tuesday, October 5, 2010

So "bulla" in Nicaragua is the word that encompasses all the noise that happens in NIcaragua-or outside your house´s window; ie:  the cars, the gullinas(chickens-there are a lot of them), the pigs, the really good music that your neighbor is playing REALLY loudly, the ranas (frogs), the eskimo bell(the icecream man who walks around the streets with icecream in his cooler, ringing the bells on his cart), and finally the numerous people yelling "¡Buenas!"  This noise happens all the time-always in the day, and always throughout the night.  I must say most of the trainees here hate it, but I have to be honest:  I love the bulla!  I fall asleep to it, I eat to it, and I talk with it in the background.  It is always a constant, and it is somewhat comforting to me-it is my lulliby.

By the way, the hurricane affected much of Nicaragua, but thankfully my town was spared from extreme flooding.  The only thing that happened was that part of the bridge leading into my town was partly washed out, so now when we take a microbus to Jinotepe, we have to get out of the bus, cross the bridge on foot, and then get on the bus on the other side of the bridge.  Things are going great--still trying to learn Spanish...crossing my fingers!

What a beautuful picture you paint for me when I hear your description of "bulla". This is one of my most favored posts. You are really feeling their lifestyle and culture, and I can tell by the way you express your feelings about the "bulla". I understand the sound of "bulla" and depending on how you look at it. Every place you go has some sort of "bulla" of it's own.

So good to hear from you, and to learn through your words, a little of the culture there! I miss you, but am glad that you're there learning and serving. I'll be praying that your Spanish comes easily. Look for a letter soon! Love ya, Julie

Hi, Sweetie-
What a great descriptive blog post. When we were in the Hawaiin Rain Forest, I recorded teh sounds of the birds and frogs. It was beautiful "bulla" to fall asleep to. Are you sleeping better in Nica? Sounds like it. Love you and miss you. Many postcards from Hawaii are on the way.
